Other Exams FAQs

These mainly apply to University and ABRSM examinations even though some questions may also apply to other examinations.

FAQs

1. I am a University student and I wish take my exams at British Council. What can I do?

In order to take your exams at the British Council Cyprus we first need an official confirmation from the University in question

This can be done by email. The University would need to email Emilia at the British Council on email address: emilia.fiakkou-hadjicharou@cy.britishcouncil.org

In the case of University of London, as we are the Overseas Authorities, the students should fill in an application form which is available from the University of London website.

The forms are then sent to the University of London. When we receive the timetable we send it to each student with Exam Venue confirmation etc (normally 15 days before the exam).

Morning university sessions usually commence at 1030 hours (CY time), and the afternoon sessions start at 1500 hours (Cy time again) - except in the rare cases where an Institution wants to keep to its strict 'exam start time' schedule. They normally last 2 to 3 hours. The Master timetable should therefore be consulted.

2. What are the charges ?

We charge 105 euro per subject taken (1st subject charged at €115 to also cover for the courier service costs - return of scripts to the UK). If a candidate takes more than 3 subjects in a given session then from the fourth subject onwards the charge is at the discounted rate of €65 - per subject.

Payment is made at any branch of the Bank of Cyprus into the British Council account, on the special deposit slips available. On his/her first day of exam, the candidate would have to produce and hand in to our Invigilator the copy of deposit slip provided to him by the bank - this is proof that he/she has paid.

3. ABRSM exams ?

Theory exams take place 3 times a year and the Practical exams twice a year. On the ABRSM Music Examinations Dates & Fees leaflet the registration periods plus exact exam fees appear. Also there is mention of the Theory exam dates.

Possession of Grade 5 Theory is a must before a candidate can proceed to take a Practical (performance) exam, Grade 6 and above. Therefore during the Practical entries the copy of certificate for Grade 5 Theory should be inserted in the relevant entry form - provided of course that the candidate(s) will be taking a Grade 6 and above practical examination.

The British Council sends out to teachers/parents/candidates their notification slip about where and when they should go for their Theory exam.

The Theory results & certificates are sent out approximately 2 months after the day of examination via registered post.

It is important to note that there are exams of different instruments and grades 1-8, plus higher level practical exams such as DipABRSM (the diploma), LRSM and finally FRSM.

Exact exam dates of the practical (performance) exams are only made known to the public around a month before the actual examinations take place. Candidates/teachers are notified of their exam date through the BC - by the sending out of the relevant notification slips.

The Practical results come out (through mail) as soon as a session is over and the Examiners for the specific session leave Cyprus to return to the UK. Results come out in the form of mark forms where examiners' comments are inserted - about each candidate's performance during the exam.

The Practical certificates come out at a later stage (through registered mail) - approximately 2 months after a particular session is over. The British Council forwards them to customers.

The ABRSM registration forms are provided by the Examination Board. Theory and Practical candidates should be entered on separate forms in accordance with ABRSM regulations.

Entry forms can be sent to customers upon request. Moreover, information regarding syllabi, 'dates & fees' leaflets is also available.

Candidates might be assigned to take their practical examination at the odeon/conservatory where they are being taught or the town's designated public venue.
